The Royal Road, now called the ‘Inca Trail,’ was the path that took pilgrims and authorized officials of the empire to the lost city of the Incas, ‘Machu Picchu.’ This journey is an unforgettable and magical experience, consisting of a network of strategically located paths with an ergonomic design and excellent structure. These trails are surrounded by beautiful landscapes with diverse vegetation and a wide range of climatic zones. The path is paved with rock blocks and features stairs, tunnels, and wooden bridges that cross rivers, temperate valleys, the warm cloud forest, and the cold Andean heights. This entire journey will make you reflect on the intellect and spiritual greatness of the Andean people, whose greatest achievement was the Inca civilization.
If you’re excited about adventure and want to hike one of the most famous tours in the world, get ready and let’s start our adventure!
We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco between 5:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. in the bus that will take us directly to Piscacucho (2,700 meters above sea level), a small community located at kilometer 82 on the road from Cusco to Machu Picchu. We will start our hike and join the team of professionals who will make our journey an unforgettable experience. Further down the river, we will reach kilometer 88 and head towards the ruins of Q’oriwayrachina, with approximately 200 ancient stone structures. After our lunch, we will cross the Urubamba River at Q’ente. Here, we will have the option to visit the archaeological sites of Wayna Q’ente and Llaqtapata, featuring beautiful Inca walls with stairs and constructions from the ancient Inca past in a natural setting. We will arrive at Chamana, near the Llaqtapata site, where we will enjoy a hearty dinner and camp overnight.
During the Inca Trail journey, we will enjoy a splendid panorama: the Vilcanota River, the Urubamba mountain range, with the snow-covered peak of Veronica Mountain (5,750 meters above sea level), and a great variety of flora and fauna along the entire route.
On this day, after breakfast at approximately 7:00 AM, we will begin our hike by visiting the impressive archaeological site of Llactapata. We will continue our hike along the Kusichaca River until we reach the village of Wayllabamba. Along this uphill journey, the landscape changes from highland to puna, a dry and high-altitude area with sparse vegetation. We will visit Incarakay and have lunch in Wayllabamba. Afterward, we will continue our ascent until we reach our second campsite called Llulluchapampa, where we will be able to appreciate a cloud forest, many flowers, and birds from the area. Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, we will start the hike towards the first and highest mountain pass at 4,215 meters above sea level, known as the Warmiwañusca Pass (Dead Woman’s Pass). We will be able to observe domesticated llamas and alpacas grazing on ichu, one of the few plants that grow at this altitude. We will also pass through an area of the forest where various types of animals live, such as sparrows and the Andean bear, or spectacled bear. It is advisable to bring candies, chocolates, and coca leaves to maintain a high sugar level in the body and counteract altitude sickness. After crossing the pass, we will descend into the Pacaymayu Valley (3,600 meters above sea level), where we will have our lunch.
This is a long but the most interesting and impressive day of our hike, as we will visit numerous archaeological sites guided and explained by our guide. From Pacaymayu, we will ascend to the second pass, the Runkurakay Pass (3,970 meters above sea level). We will visit the archaeological complex of the same name at 3,800 meters above sea level, where we will find significant remnants of the Inca Culture. After crossing the pass, we will descend towards Yanacocha (Black Lagoon) and finally reach Sayacmarca (3,624 meters above sea level) for a guided tour of approximately 20 minutes. Then, we will head to “Chaquicocha,” observing how the landscape changes from dry and mountainous to green semi-tropical, marking the cloud forest. We will continue with an easy ascent to reach the third pass, the Phuyupatamarca Pass (3,580 meters above sea level), where we will spend the night. We will pass through an Inca tunnel and reach the aforementioned pass. This is one of the most complete and best-preserved archaeological complexes, located at the highest point of the mountain. Phuyupatamarca means “The City above the Clouds,” from where we can observe a sophisticated complex, composed of water fountains with solid foundations and offering impressive views of the Urubamba River. Dinner and campsite.
In Phuyupatamarca, we will wake up early at approximately 3:00 a.m. to have breakfast and get ready to start our hike, which will take about 3 hours to reach Wiñaywayna. From there, we will head towards the Sun Gate or “Inti Punku,” which will take approximately another 2 hours. Here, we will enjoy a panoramic view of Machu Picchu and witness the sunrise after walking along the flat stones at the edge of the mountain cliffs. From Inti Punku, we will walk for 40 minutes to reach Machu Picchu, where we will enjoy a two-hour guided tour. We will have brief stops to take photos during our exploration of the citadel and marvel at the spectacular views of the valleys and mountains. Afterwards, in the afternoon, we will descend to the town of Aguas Calientes for lunch and, if time allows, have the opportunity to visit the thermal baths. Finally, we will board the return train to the city of Cusco.
