At first sight, Moray resembles an amphitheater with several circular terraces. However, this unique Inca site was actually an agricultural experimentation center, using the different heights of the terraces to create various microclimates. Nearby, you’ll find the Maras salt mines, an impressive salt extraction complex that has been in use for almost a millennium and has been maintained through generations. At the salt ponds, you can see local people working in this traditional activity.
At 08:00 hrs, the transport will pick you up from your hotel (in the city center) and begin a tour to the tourist sites of Maras and Moray. First, you will visit the Maras salt mines, an impressive salt extraction complex made up of large salt ponds, using a technique passed down through generations.
Next, you will visit the Moray archaeological complex, which consists of circular terraces used for agricultural purposes, featuring a complex irrigation system that reaches the three sectors of the site. The Quechuas refer to these areas as ‘muyus,’ and the deepest part of the largest depression is 150 meters.
The experience will conclude near the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, around 14:00 hrs.
