Hiking around Ausangate, the fifth-highest mountain in all of Peru, is an unforgettable experience. This 1-day tour takes you around the 7 wonderful Ausangate lakes of different shades and colors that surround this highly important guardian Apu (mountain spirit) from ancient times to the present. With an altitude of 20,941 feet above sea level, Ausangate is one of the mountains that belong to the Vilcanota mountain range, in addition to being a regional conservation area with an area of more than 66,514 hectares.
In this region, we will also find the famous Rainbow Mountain of Vinicunca, the Rainbow Mountain of Palccoyo, and the great Red Valley. Normally, this complete route around the Ausangate Mountain takes you between 5 to 6 days, but we have prepared this one-day itinerary so that you can make the best of your time and see the 7 Ausangate lakes and their wonderful landscapes as well.
Firstly, at 4:00 a.m. we will begin by picking up all of our passengers from their respective hotels around the city. Then, we will drive for approximately 3 hours south of Cusco until we reach the town of Tinki where we will make a brief stop before continuing for 45 more minutes to the community of Pacchanta. Once there, we will enjoy a delicious breakfast.
Then, we will start our hike towards the 7 Lakes of Ausangate. It will be a trek of approximately 5 hours where we will see the following lakes: Otorongo (Male), Otorongo (Female), Alqaccocha, Q’omercocha, Azulcocha, Pucacocha, and Patacocha.
We will also be able to appreciate several impressive landscapes of the Peruvian Andes, South American camelids (llamas, alpacas, etc..), birds of the region, and much more. After the hike, we will return to the town of Pacchanta, where we will slip into the thermal baths to relax our muscles. It is also in this town where we will have lunch. Then, we will take our transportation vehicle back to Cusco, where we will be arriving at approximately 18:00 p.m.
