We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 6:00 AM to head to the town of Lares. Along the way, you will be able to admire the majestic Sacred Valley of the Incas with its fertile lands. We will first arrive at the small village of Calca (2,940 m.a.s.l), then ascend through the small villages of Totora and Maucaupata, where the locals wear traditional clothing and primarily engage in textile work, agriculture, and livestock farming. The journey takes approximately 4 hours to reach Lares (3,200 m.a.s.l), where you can have breakfast and visit the local market for some shopping. Next, we will visit the hot springs for a refreshing and energizing bath while our cook prepares lunch. Afterward, we will meet with the muleteers and horses to start the hike of a little over 2 hours, arriving at our first campsite called “Huacahuasi” (3,600 m.a.s.l).

After breakfast, we will start our hike towards our second campsite. We begin early this day as we will ascend to the Huacahuasi Pass (4,500 meters above sea level). Along the way, we will appreciate various rural communities with their mountains, snow-capped peaks, streams, and lagoons, as well as their customs and textile production for daily use. After crossing the pass, we will descend to have lunch in the area. After a rest, we will continue our hike to the Mantanay Natural Reserve (3,480 meters above sea level) through forests of Queñua trees (Polylepis), rich in flora, fauna, and birdwatching opportunities. Dinner and camping.

After breakfast in Pucara, we will start our hike of approximately 3 hours towards Pucara, where a delicious lunch awaits us. We will then rest before boarding the transport that will take us to Ollantaytambo. After 2:00 PM, we will board the train to Aguas Calientes and spend our final night in a hotel at the base of the majestic Machu Picchu.

  • Altitude: Mantanay (3,900m) – Pucara (3,000m) – Yanahuara (3,000m) – Ollantaytambo (2,800m) – Aguas Calientes (2,050m)

Very early, we will take the bus up to Machu Picchu to enjoy the sunrise in this magical place before other tourists arrive from Cusco. We will experience the tranquility of the Lost City of the Incas on a guided tour of approximately 2 hours, focusing only on Circuit 3 or Circuit 4, with brief stops for photos during our tour.

Optionally, you may hike Huayna Picchu Mountain (if you have previously reserved your entry ticket). From there, you will have spectacular views of the entire Machu Picchu citadel, as well as the surrounding valleys and mountains. After this visit, we will take the bus down to Machu Picchu Pueblo (or Aguas Calientes) for lunch, and then board the train back to Ollantaytambo, where we will transfer to the tourist transport to return to Cusco.

NOTE: Guided tours in Machu Picchu last between 2 to 2.5 hours maximum for shared service, and between 2 to 3 hours for private service, depending on the guide’s coordination with the passengers (times also depend on train return schedules, lunch time, and descent to Aguas Calientes).

Travel Insurance:  It is recommend to have, and if possible, send us your travel insurance before your arrival in Peru.

Passport: It is important to present the same original documents (Passport or identification) that you used to register your booking when entering the inca trail; otherwise you will not be allowed entry. The document numbers must match those used for the reservation. If you cahnged your Passport number after making the reservation, please inform us before your arrival in Cusco or bring both documents ( the old and the new one).

Extra Night in Aguas Calientes: If you wish to stay an extra night in Aguas Calientes, please let us know at the time of booking. After booking there is an option to change the date of this ticket.  (With a penalty fee), according to the train companies policies. You will need to book a hotel night in Aguas Calientes for the 4th Day. Opcionally, you can purchase additional tickets for Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu for the 5th Day (not included in the package)

Huayna Picchu Mountain: If you want to hike Huayna Picchu Mountain, you can do so on this day as well, but it is best to do on the 5th Day due to the physical effort to do required. This tickets must be purchased separately as well in advance, as they are not included in this package.

Frequent Questions

The Lares trek is considered difficult. It is recommend to have previous trekking experience and to be in good physical condition, as you will be walking at high altitudes an in on uneven terrain.

Previous trekking experience is not required. However, it is advisable to be in good physical condition and to have done hikes at moderate altitudes before attempting this trek.

The weather can range from sunny and warm in the lower elevations to cold and higher altitudes. Daytime temperatures can be pleasant, but they may drop significantly at night and early morning. It´s a good idea to be prepared for variable weather condition, including the possibility of rain.

It is essential to bring appropriate trekking clothing, including thermal layers, a waterproof jacket, sturdy trekking shoes, a good sleeping bag for cold temperatures, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a comfortable backpack. It is also important to carry a reusable water bottle and energy snacks.

Yes, transportation from Cusco to Lares is incluided in the tour.  A tourist vehicle will pick up participants from their hotel in Cusco and take them to the starting point of the trek in Lares.

During the nights in Huacahuasi and Mantanay, trekkers stay in campsites. Durable and comfortable tents are provided, along with sleeping pads. The support team is responsible for setting up and taking down the campsites, as well as preparing the meals.

Yes,it is posible to accommodate specific dietary restrictions, such as vegetarianism, veganism, or food intolerances. It is important to inform us of these needs in advance so that the cooks can prepare suitable meals.

During the trek, altitudes of up 4,600 meters above sea level are reached at Huacahuasi Pass. To prevent altitude sickness. It is recommend to acclimate in Cusco for at least two days before the trek , walk ata steady pace, stay hidrated, and avoid alcohol. Preventive may also be taken, but always under medical advice.
