This trek is an alternative to the Inca Trail. Huchuy Qosqo is an archeological site located in the highlands of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Huchuy Qosqo is known for its mud and stone constructions and it is believed that it was an artisan town inhabited by the Acllas —women dedicated to serving the Incas—. On this tour, we will marvel at the imposing snow-covered peak of the Pitusaray mountain, on the right margin of the Urumbaba river. We will also be delighted by the changes in flora and fauna as we cross different climate zones. This adventure will help you connect with nature and the history of the Inca people, which is still alive in the inhabitants of the Andean highlands.
Day 1,CUSCO — QORICOCHA
We will depart from the city of the Cusco aboard a tourist bus, headed towards the starting point of our trek. At the highest point of our journey, on the Cerro Sicllajasa mountain pass, we will will be able to see Cusco City, as well as the mountains and snow-capped peaks that surround the Sacred Valley. The backdrop to our hike up the side of the mountain will be the gorgeous mountain landscape, peppered with ichu grasslands (wild weed that grows in the puna ecoregion).
Along the way, we will find the Qoricocha lake, whose name is the combination of two Quechua words: Qori (“gold”) and Cocha (“lake”). The locals will greet us with flowers and music. Later, we will have lunch and enjjoy a brief cultural exchange before having dinner and spending the night at the community-managed Qoricocha Lodge. The cultural exchange consists of demonstrations of the daily activities of the community, such as textile weaving, and the raising and grazing of camelids and ovine cattle.
